Nike creates trainers especially for medical staff working long shifts | Daily Mail Online

Nike has created a pair of trainers specifically for doctors and nurses to help them get through 12-hour shifts.

The Air Zoom Pulse is elasticated and easy to get on and off, cushioned for comfort during days spent on their feet and coated with a wipe-down surface.

The sports clothing company says the shoes are made for ‘everyday heroes’ and were made with input from hospital workers.

It describes the footwear as ‘almost a traditional clog made athletic’ and will launch them next month at an unknown price, although similar ones cost upwards of £100.

Variations on the trainers’ designs have also been created by children at a hospital in Oregon and some money made from those will be donated back to the hospital.

The Air Zoom Pulse trainers have been designed with ‘everyday hero’ nurses, doctors and carers in mind, according to Nike

Nike said the trainers were coated to stop fluid spills soaking into them, and had an especially grippy sole to stop workers slipping.

In an unveiling of the shoes the company said: ‘Nurses, for example, walk approximately four to five miles and sit for less than an hour during the course of a 12-hour shift.

‘The work is physically and mentally demanding. The design for the Air Zoom Pulse tackles those challenges with simplicity in mind.

‘The shoe is easy to get on and off, and equally simple to clean. The fit, cushioning and traction systems work together to secure the foot in all hospital conditions.’

Nike said the trainers have an extra grippy rubber sole so wearers don’t slip over, and they also have the Star of Life medical asterix logo which represents emergency services

Some of the trainers have been designed by children at the OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland, Oregon, and some of the proceeds from those will be donated back to the hospital

Anyone who’s spent time in a hospital will know many medical staff wear rubber clog-style shoes – and it probably isn’t for their fashion appeal.

According to Shoes for Crews, which makes shoes especially for nurses, doctors and other professionals, posture support, cleanliness, longevity and grip are the key reasons.

Spending entire days walking around busy wards and operating theatres means shoes must be comfortable and supportive the feet, which the wide, soft shoes are.

Spillages – sometimes gory or grotesque – are common in medical settings so the rubber or plastic surface is ideal for wiping clean and carrying on, unlike a fabric trainer which would absorb any liquids.

And slippery floors can be hazardous so the shoes must be extra grippy, which traditional smart shoes often aren’t.

How much the trainers will cost isn’t known but other Air Zoom models on the company’s website cost around £105-£115 ($134-$147) per pair.

Nike said key features of the shoes are their laceless fastening, the wipe-clean plastic coating and its durable rubber sole.

The shoes also have a elastic strap which means people will be able to take it on and off with one hand and which keeps the heel securely inside the shoe.

And the trainers are styled with the Star of Life logo, which is an internationally used asterix which represents the emergency services and particularly ambulances.

Many medical staff wear backless clogs because they’re easy to get on and off and are quick to clean.

Nike, which tested and developed the shoes with OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland, Oregon, added: ‘One can think of the Air Zoom Pulse as almost a traditional clog made athletic – all the arch and posture support of that industry favorite is augmented in the Pulse, with a smooth capacity for natural motion.’

Children at the hospital designed some of their own versions of the shoes and proceeds from those will be donated to the Portland hospital.

The shoes will be launched on December 7.

FBI investigates ‘criminal enterprise’ re Jeffrey Epstein death | Daily Mail Online

The two federal Bureau of Prisons employees, Tova Noel and Michael Thomas, were charged on Tuesday with falsifying records and conspiracy in relation to Jeffrey Epstein’s death

The FBI is investigating the possibility of ‘criminal enterprise’ in connection with Jeffrey Epstein’s death as two correctional officers were charged with falsifying records to cover up their failure to check in on him the night he killed himself.

The two federal Bureau of Prisons employees, Tova Noel, 31, and Michael Thomas, 41, were charged on Tuesday with falsifying records and conspiracy in relation to Epstein’s death.

They are accused of falling asleep and surfing the internet instead of checking on the millionaire pedophile in his cell just 15 feet away from them at the Metropolitan Correctional Center on August 10.

Their arrest came as Bureau of Prisons’ director Kathleen Hawk Sawyer testified in front of a Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday.

‘The FBI is involved and they are looking at criminal enterprise,’ Sawyer said after being questioned as to how this could happen in such a high profile case.

Noel and Thomas, who were assigned to Epstein’s Special Housing Unit at the federal jail, are accused of failing to check on him every half-hour, as required, and of fabricating log entries to claim they had.

According to the indictment, Noel and Thomas sat at their desks, browsed online and moved about the common area for a substantial portion of their shift instead of completing the required checks on prisoners. Noel and Thomas allegedly appeared to be asleep at their desks for about two hours.

The indictment says Noel used her computer to search for furniture sales and benefit websites during her shift. Thomas allegedly searched online for motorcycle sales and sports news briefly at 1am, 4am and 6am.

The two guards are accused of repeatedly signing false certifications saying that they had conducted multiple counts of inmates during their shift. The prisoners were not checked on for eight hours, according to the indictment. The guards discovered Epstein’s body at 6.30am.

Noel and Thomas entered the tier where Epstein’s cell was just after 6.30am to serve breakfast to the inmates. An alarm was activated in the unit at 6.33am after the officers found Epstein unresponsive in his cell with a noose around his neck.

A supervisor who had just started his shift immediately responded to the unit.

Noel allegedly told him: ‘We did not complete the 3am and 5am rounds’. Thomas added: ‘We messed up’ and ‘I messed up, she’s not to blame, we didn’t do any rounds’.

The guards are expected to be charged in the U.S. District Court in Manhattan later on Tuesday over their alleged failure to check on the millionaire pedophile in his cell the night he took his own life. His body is pictured above being brought out by medical examiners

The pending charges are the first in connection with Epstein’s death after he took his own life in August at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (above) while awaiting trial on charges of sexually abusing teenage girls

Noel, who has worked at the jail since 2016, was working an overtime shift and had been on duty for roughly 14 hours in the unit by the time Epstein’s body was found.

Her colleague, Thomas, had worked at the jail since 2007. He was also working an overtime shift the night Epstein died.

The two guards were required to jointly conduct institutional counts at 4pm, 10pm, 12am, 3am and 5am of the prisoners in the unit.

Both officers are required to walk the six levels of the unit to count and observe every inmate.

They then have to each fill in and sign a form with the date and time the counts were performed.

The slips are then collected and taken to the prison’s control center where officers double check them to make sure every inmate is accounted for.

In addition to the count, officers assigned to the unit Epstein was in are required to walk around every 30 minutes to ensure inmates are ‘alive and accounted for’, according to the indictment. They are also required to sign forms saying they carried out these 30-minute checks.

During their shift, Noel and Thomas were required to carry out five institutional counts. Prosecutors say surveillance video shows the pair did not conduct a single count despite them logging that they did.

Noel is accused of falsely signing off that they had carried out more than 75 separate 30-minute checks.

Surveillance video showed Epstein being taken to his cell by Noel at about 7.49pm after he met with his attorney, the indictment says.

Noel was filmed briefly walking up to the door leading to the tier where Epstein’s cell was at about 10pm.

‘This was the last time anyone, including any correctional officer, walked up to, let alone entered, the only entrance to the tier in which Epstein was housed until approximately 6.30am,’ the complaint says.

Noel was charged with five counts of falsifying records about how Epstein was monitored, while Thomas was charged with three counts. Both also face a conspiracy charge. Each count carries a maximum five-year prison term.

His autopsy report found his neck had been broken in several places, including the hyoid bone located near the Adam’s apple. The city’s medical examiner ruled Epstein’s death a suicide but that didn’t stop the conspiracy theories from swirling

The procedures that should’ve been followed in Epstein’s unit:

The two guards were required to jointly conduct institutional counts at 4pm, 10pm, 12am, 3am and 5am of the prisoners in the unit.

Both officers are required to walk the six levels of the unit to count and observe every inmate.

They then have to each fill in and sign a form with the date and time the counts were performed.

In addition to the count, officers assigned to the unit Epstein was in are required to walk around every 30 minutes to ensure inmates are ‘alive and accounted for’, according to the indictment.

They are also required to sign forms saying they carried out these 30-minute checks.

In total, the two guards were required to carry out five institutional counts.

Prosecutors say surveillance video shows the officers did not conduct a single count despite them logging that they did.

They are also accused of falsely signing off that they had carried out more than 75 separate 30-minute checks.

The charges are the first in connection with the 66-year-old’s death after he took his own life in August at the Metropolitan Correctional Center while awaiting trial on charges of sexually abusing teenage girls.

Both guards had been working overtime because of staffing shortages when Epstein was found.

The two officers were placed on administrative leave while the FBI and the Justice Department’s inspector general investigated the circumstances surrounding Epstein’s death. The warden of the Metropolitan Correctional Center was also reassigned.

Epstein had been on suicide watch after he was found July 23 on his cell floor with bruises on his neck. He was taken off suicide watch about a week before his death, which meant he was less closely monitored but still supposed to be checked on every 30 minutes.

Investigators believe those checks weren’t done for several hours before Epstein was discovered in his cell with a bed sheet around his neck.

The city’s medical examiner ruled Epstein’s death a suicide but that didn’t stop the conspiracy theories from swirling.

Both Epstein’s brother and the lawyers who represented him in his criminal case have expressed doubts about the medical examiner’s conclusion.

His autopsy report found his neck had been broken in several places, including the hyoid bone located near the Adam’s apple.

Forensic experts said that breakages to that specific bone could occur when people hanged themselves but were more commonly seen in victims who had been strangled.

A source close to Epstein told that he appeared to be in good spirits in the days before his suicide.

His brother Mark recently said he could not think of a single reason why Epstein would have taken his own life. He called the financier’s death ‘suspicious’ and said he has seen no evidence to support the official ruling on his brother’s cause of death.

A 31-year-old woman, who claims she was trafficked and sexually abused by Epstein when she was 15, spoke out publicly for the first time on Monday to announce that she is launching a lawsuit against against his estate

During a press conference in Los Angeles, the woman – only identified as Jane Doe 15 – was spotted wearing a bracelet that read: ‘Jeffrey Epstein didn’t kill himself’

Dr Michael Baden, a forensic pathologist hired by Epstein’s family to observe the autopsy, has claimed the injuries were more consistent with homicide by strangulation than suicide.

He claimed he hadn’t seen the same fractures in a suicidal hanging case in 50 years.

Dr Baden previously said authorities could help clear things up by being more transparent about their findings in Epstein’s death.

Epstein’s death ended the possibility of a trial that would have involved prominent figures, and it sparked widespread anger that he wouldn’t have to answer for the allegations.

He had pleaded not guilty to sexually abusing girls as young as 14 and young women in New York and Florida in the early 2000s.

Even with his death, federal prosecutors in New York have continued to investigate the allegations against Epstein. The Justice Department has vowed to aggressively investigate and bring charges against anyone who may have helped him.

There is also a related investigation in Paris, where accusers are complaining police haven’t done enough to track down potential witnesses.

Surgeons show off charcoaled lungs of chain smoker who died at 52 | Daily Mail Online

Shocking footage shows the tar-blackened lungs of a chain smoker who was hooked to the killer habit for 30 years.

Instead of being a healthy pink, they were charcoal in colour and extremely inflamed from decades of tobacco residue clogging them up.

Doctors from the Wuxi People’s Hospital in Jiangsu, China, extracted the organs after the 52-year-old man, who had multiple lung diseases, died.

The video, recorded by the surgeons, has been viewed more than 25million times on social media, with users dubbing it the ‘best anti-smoking ad ever’.

It was uploaded by the hospital with the caption: ‘Do you still have the courage to smoke?’

Medics show off tar-blackened lungs after removing them from a 52-year-old man who had been a chain smoker for 30 years

The patient had signed up to donate his organs after death, but medics quickly realised they would not be able to use them.

Dr Chen, a lung transplant surgeon and also vice president of the facility, led the operation.

He said: ‘The patient didn’t undergo a CT scan before his death. He was declared brain dead, and his lungs were donated shortly after that.

‘Initial oxygenation index tests were okay, but when we harvested the organs, we realised we wouldn’t be able to use them.

‘We Chinese love smoking. It would be impractical to say that we wouldn’t accept the lungs of all smokers, but there are strict standards.

‘[We would accept] lungs from people under 60 years of age who have only recently died, minor infections in the lungs and relatively clean X-rays are also acceptable. If the above conditions are met, we would consider transplanting the lungs.’

The Government will aim to end smoking in England by 2030 as part of a range of measures to address preventable ill health.

Its green paper, released in July, said more needs to be done to improve public health.

The paper read: ‘Thanks to our concerted efforts on smoking, we now have one of the lowest smoking rates in Europe.

‘Yet, for the 14 percent of adults who still smoke, it’s the main risk to health.

Smokers are disproportionately located in areas of high deprivation. In Blackpool, one in four pregnant women smoke. In Westminster, it’s one in 50.’

The paper proposed offering stop-smoking help to all cigarette users who are admitted to NHS hospitals.

It said it wants to reduce the smoking rate to 12 per cent by 2022 and to zero by 2030.

‘This includes an ultimatum for industry to make smoked tobacco obsolete by 2030,’ the paper added, ‘with smokers quitting or moving to reduced risk products like e-cigarettes.’

Professor Peter Openshaw, of the National Heart and Lung Institute, said the patient had been suffering from lung pulmonary emphysema.

It causes the organs to become severely inflamed and expand, and makes sufferers short of breath.

He said that medics may have also inflated the lungs with air or fluid prior to harvesting them for donation.

This makes them look much larger than the normal deflated lung postmortem, he explained.

Dr Chen uploaded the clip to social media with the hashtag ‘jieyan’ – Mandarin for ‘quit smoking’.

He wrote: ‘Many smokers in this country have lungs which look like this.

‘Our team decided to reject these lungs for transplant. If you’re a heavy smoker, your lungs may not be accepted even if you choose to donate them after death.

‘Look at these lungs – do you still have the courage to smoke?’

According to a 2018 study by China’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 350million adults (27 per cent) are smokers.

In England, One in seven adults now smoke tobacco – around 5.9million people, down from 7.7million in 2011, when the figure was closer to one in five.

Smoking is the biggest avoidable cause of cancer and is known to produce chemicals which cause at least 15 different forms of the disease.

Evidence shows it causes around 70 per cent of all cases of lung cancer, which has the highest death count of any form of cancer.

People are drawn to smoking because nicotine can make them feel good, but it’s easy to become addicted and very difficult to quit once smoking becomes a habit.

Smoking kills 1.2million people every year and people who do it are twice as likely to have a heart attack and up to 30 times more likely to get lung cancer.

E.P.A. to Tighten Limits on Science Used to Write Public Health Rules – The New York Times

A E.P.A. spokeswoman said in an emailed statement, “The agency does not discuss draft, deliberative documents or actions still under internal and interagency review.”

On Wednesday, the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology will hold a hearing on E.P.A.’s efforts. A top pulmonary specialist and a representative of the country’s largest nonprofit funder of research on Parkinson’s disease, the Michael J. Fox Foundation, are expected to testify that the E.P.A.’s proposed rule would eliminate the use of valuable research showing the dangers of pollution to human health.

Mr. Pruitt’s original proposal drew nearly 600,000 comments, the vast majority of them in opposition. Among them were leading public health groups and some of the country’s top scientific organizations like the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

The National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners said it was “deeply concerned” that the rule would lead to the exclusion of studies, “ultimately resulting in weaker environmental and health protections and greater risks to children’s health.” The National Center for Science Education said ruling out studies that do not use open data “would send a deeply misleading message, ignoring the thoughtful processes that scientists use to ensure that all relevant evidence is considered.” The Medical Library Association and the Association of Academic Health Science Libraries said the proposal “contradicts our core values.”

Industry groups said the rule would ensure greater public understanding of the science behind regulations that cost consumers money.

“Transparency, reproducibility and application of current scientific knowledge are paramount to providing the foundation required for sound regulations,” the American Chemistry Council wrote to E.P.A. in support of the plan.

The new version does not appear to have taken any of the opposition into consideration. At a meeting of the agency’s independent science advisory board this summer, Mr. Wheeler said he was “a little shocked” at the amount of opposition to the proposal, but he was committed to finalizing it. Beyond retroactivity, the latest version stipulates that all data and models used in studies under consideration at the E.P.A. would have to be made available to the agency so it can reanalyze research itself. The politically appointed agency administrator would have wide-ranging discretion over which studies to accept or reject.

Yovanovitch gets standing ovation at the end of 5-hour hearing

Football is the sport that most frequently sends kids to the ER with injuries, a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics found.

The report, published Friday in National Health Statistics Reports, found that between 2010 and 2016, there were about 2.7 million emergency room visits each year for sports injuries among people aged 5-24. Football was found responsible for the largest share of injuries, making up 14.1 percent of the visits, followed by basketball, pedal cycling, soccer, ice skating, roller skating, and skateboarding.

“It’s important to understand the types of injuries that are most commonly seen in the emergency department and which sports account for those injuries in order to monitor and guide injury prevention efforts,” Pinyao Anna Rui, an author of the report and a survey statistician at the NCHS, told CNN.

Dennis Cardone, a sports medicine specialist and co-director of the Center for Young Athletes at NYU Langone Sports Health in New York, explained the results on CNN and said, “as someone sticks to one sport, they’re certainly at risk of injury.” To reduce the risk of sports injuries, he advised coaches to “remember to follow guidelines” and parents to “encourage their children to enjoy a more wide variety of activities instead of specializing in just one sport.”

Swift and Big Machine Records, which produced her first six albums, unamicably parted ways a year ago in what was the beginning of a high-profile fight over who controls Swift’s songs. That reached a new height Thursday night when Swift posted an open letter accusing the label of stopping her from performing her songs live — and Big Machine is denying it all.

In her statement, Swift discussed how she’d be getting an American Music Award deeming her the “artist of the decade,” and wanted to perform a medley of her songs at the awards show. She also said, and “this isn’t the way I had planned on telling you this news,” that a Netflix documentary about her was in the works as well. But all of those things are “a big question mark” because Scott Borchetta and Scooter Braun — Big Machine’s founder and the man whose holding company bought Big Machine earlier this year, respectively — “have now said that I’m not allowed to perform my old songs on television” because she’d be re-recording her music before she’s allowed to in November 2020, Swift said.

On Friday, Big Machine fired back. “We were shocked to see her Tumblr statements yesterday based on false information,” and “at no point” did Big Machine attempt to block her performances or documentary, it said in a statement. It decried her for risking “the safety of our employees and their families,” stemming from how she directed fans to question Borchetta and Braun and their other clients. And with what was likely a deliberate choice of words, Big Machine directly addressed Swift to say “the narrative you have created does not exist.” Kathryn Krawczyk

Jeffrey Epstein’s autopsy more consistent with homicidal strangulation than suicide, Dr. Michael Baden reveals

Forensic pathologist Dr. Michael Baden exclusively reveals findings from his investigation into Jeffrey Epstein’s autopsy on ‘Fox & Friends.’

The body of disgraced money man and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who was found dead in his Manhattan federal prison cell in August, bore telltale signs of homicide despite an official ruling that he killed himself, a pioneering forensic pathologist revealed to “Fox & Friends” in an exclusive interview Wednesday.

The bombshell claim by Dr. Michael Baden, a former New York City medical examiner who has worked on high-profile cases during a five-decade medical career, is certain to reignite suspicions that surfaced immediately after Epstein, who was awaiting trial on federal sex-trafficking charges involving underage girls, was discovered dead in his cell on Aug. 10. Baden, who was hired by Epstein’s brother and observed the autopsy, told Fox News its findings are more consistent with homicidal strangulation than suicidal hanging. He noted that the 66-year-old Epstein had two fractures on the left and right sides of his larynx, specifically the thyroid cartilage or Adam’s apple, as well as one fracture on the left hyoid bone above the Adam’s apple, Baden told Fox News.

“Those three fractures are extremely unusual in suicidal hangings and could occur much more commonly in homicidal strangulation,” Baden, who is also a Fox News contributor, said.

While there’s not enough information to be conclusive yet, the three fractures were “rare,” said Baden, who’s probed cases involving O.J. Simpson, President John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, record producer Phil Spector, New England Patriots star Aaron Hernandez and many others.

“I’ve not seen in 50 years where that occurred in a suicidal hanging case,” the 85-year-old medical legend told Fox News.

Baden, who’s examined more than 20,000 bodies and hosted HBO’s “Autopsy,” explained that if a person weighed 120 pounds and their head weighed 10 pounds, there would be 110 pounds of pressure on the neck at the jaw during a hanging. But, if someone put a hand around a person’s neck and squeezed, that could double or even triple the pressure on the neck, Baden said.

There were also hemorrhages in Epstein’s eyes that were common in homicidal strangulation and uncommon, though not unheard of, in suicidal hangings, the forensic pathologist said.

“The prominent hemorrhage in the soft tissues of the neck next to the fractures is evidence of a fresh neck compression that could have caused the death,” Baden said.

Baden stressed his independent study was not complete. “The investigation is not completed until all the information has come in,” he said.

Epstein was found hanging in his prison cell at the high-security Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan and was later declared dead, investigators said.

Prosecutors alleged that the previously convicted sex offender paid girls as young as 14 hundreds of dollars for massages before he molested them in his homes in New York and Palm Beach, Fla., between 2002 and 2005. He was awaiting trial in federal prison, thus federal agencies — presumably the FBI and Justice Department — had jurisdiction over the investigation into his death, Baden explained.

He said it was unknown to him and the Epstein family what work the feds may have done and what results they might have.

The ligature, or item used to tie something tightly, allegedly was made from a sheet that had been twisted and put around Epstein’s neck, Baden said. Evidence on the cloth material could help prove whether or not someone else was involved in Epstein’s death.

“Whoever it is would have their DNA all over the ligature,” he said. “We don’t have those results yet,” he added, saying those results “should be reported quickly to give an idea and lessen the speculation.”

“It appears that this could have been a mistake,” Baden said. “There’s evidence here of homicide that should be investigated, to see if it is or isn’t homicide.”

Epstein previously was discovered on July 23 — over two weeks before his death — on the floor of his prison cell with marks around his neck, after which he was placed on suicide watch.

He was taken off suicide watch a week later and put in another cell with a roommate, Baden said — but the second inmate was taken out a few days after that, leaving Epstein alone in the cell.

Then there were security cameras that were supposed to be recording the cell and the hallway outside, to see who went in and out. Both apparently had malfunctioned, according to Baden.

Mark Epstein, Jeffrey’s next of kin, had hired Baden to perform an independent investigation because the family wasn’t getting answers — and if his brother’s death was, in fact, a homicide, “he and others may be at risk,” Baden said, “because of somebody not wanting knowledge given out.”

Through his five decades of experience, Epstein’s death is not straightforward, Baden said.

“It doesn’t give you the answer,” he said. “It’s not a typical hanging case.”

Xylitol Poisoning: Candy Canes Really Can Kill Your Pooch
Xylitol Poisoning

Can dogs get sick and even die from eating candy canes? The answer is yes. A pet owner in Texas shares a warning with a local news station after her dog, Harleigh, ate sugar-free candy canes and the next day passed away. She was limp and sick after ingesting Xylitol which causes liver failure and hypoglycemia.

What is Xylitol? It’s the sugar-free sweetener often found in gum and peanut butter. According to the Preventive Vet, Xylitol poisons well over 6,000 dogs each year!

This is a warning for other pet owners as having food that contains Xylitol in the house is all too common. This Texas dog was brought into the clinic showing signs of Xylitol toxicity.

“Somehow I feel like I failed her by leaving candy canes on the table,” Harleigh’s owner, Darla Martinez, of Groves, Texas, told 12 News.

Xylitol Toxicity
Chihuahua-mix named Harleigh via

There are over 700 products that contain Xylitol. The categories range from gum, candies, and mints (lollipops!) to peanut and nut butters. We all fill Kongs with peanut butter, so this is a very important list to consider and review before shopping for toy fillers.

If you suspect your dog ingested candy or gum, immediately head to your veterinarian or emergency vet clinic. Symptoms can include:

  • Weakness or lethargy
  • Walking drunk
  • Depression
  • Acute collapse
  • Seizures
  • Vomiting
  • Racing heart rate
  • Trembling or tremoring
  • Jaundiced gums
  • Diarrhea
  • Black-tarry stool
  • Bruising
  • Clotting problems
  • Abnormal mentation

Our Best Advice?

Inducing vomiting is NOT always the right thing to do, so you need to call your vet first and ask about how best to proceed. Some items will do more harm if they are vomited so be careful!

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) tells us,

“Time is critical for successfully treating accidental poisoning. Pick up the phone and call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center(1-888-426-4435; a consultation fee may apply). Be prepared to provide your pet’s breed, age, weight and any symptoms. Keep the product container or plant sample with you to assist in identification so the appropriate treatment recommendations can be made.”

Great resources include the AVMA’s pet poison tips, an important site for pet parents. And the ASPCA Poison Control

The pet poison helpline is a contact number you should have saved in your contact list!

Since xylitol toxicity can cause both low blood glucose and low potassium levels, the vet will do blood work to rule out a number of things. Signs of hypoglycemia and even severe hypoglycemia are common. It is important to share with your vet or dvm how much Xylitol they potentially got into it and what the food was they ingested. Was it sugar-free chewing gum like Trident, chewable vitamins, or breath mints? All of these have the potential to have toxic effects.

Your dog will require hospitalization for blood sugar monitoring, dextrose administration, iv fluids, liver protectants, and any other supportive care that may be needed. Your dog will likely need critical care. Write down the symptoms of xylitol poisoning you see and let your vet know immediately. Large amounts of vomiting and diarrhea are a vet emergency.

Xylitol ingestion is very serious! It doesn’t matter what the body weight is of your dog and even large dogs can ingest enough to make them very sick.

Do you have any experiences with Xylitol toxicity? If you’d like to share your story, please leave a comment below.

Protesters slam Melania Trump’s visit to Boston hospital with cuddling program for babies born on drugs

Fox News Flash top headlines for Nov. 6 are here. Check out what’s clicking on

First lady Melania Trump visited a Boston hospital Wednesday to meet with caregivers and administrators of a pioneering program that uses cuddling to help infants who are born dependent on drugs or alcohol.

Outside Boston Medical Center in the city’s South End, as many as 200 workers protested the visit, saying the first lady represented an administration who they say has discouraged immigrants from seeking health care with tough immigration policies. Some carried signs that read “BMC cares for all patients” and “We believe that healthy women = healthy families = healthy society.”

“Families need to be together, that the best way to support children’s development is for them to be with their families,” Carmen Rosa Norona, a psychotherapist working with young children affected by trauma, told The Associated Press. “That being the children, having the possibility to grow up with their families, is a human right in that the policies of separating families are a violation of those rights.”

“This is not a person that we want to come to our home, our hospital,” added Cecilia Girard, a 26-year employee who works as a nurse-midwife.

Inside the hospital, Melania Trump, who was accompanied by Health and Human Services Alex Azar, told hospital staff that she was “very focused” on their work with babies born with neonatal abstinence syndrome, a withdrawal condition newborns experience after being chronically exposed to opioids during the mother’s pregnancy. The hospital also works with expectant mothers who misuse drugs or alcohol.

“I hope today’s visit helps shine a light on programs like yours,” said the first lady, who was visiting as part of her “Be Best” initiative.

Health experts say cuddling helps lower stress in infants born to addicted women by increasing parental presence at the infant’s bedside, skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding, according to BMC.

After listening to the doctors and administrators, Mrs. Trump then spoke with doctors in front of the hospital’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. The White House said Trump met with children and families enrolled in a hospital recovery program aimed at providing families the education and resources needed to overcome the effects of addiction

Azar emphasized that the Trump administration has put a special focus on the problem, including advancing clinical trials on neonatal opioid withdrawal.

“Neonatal abstinence syndrome is one of the most heartbreaking parts of the opioid crisis,” Azar said.

Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., released a statement Wednesday saying that Trump’s visit is “a chance to remind and educate the Secretary and First Lady of the ways in which our medical centers work to eliminate disparities and ensure that all people, regardless of income and immigration status, have a fundamental human right to healthcare.”

Doctors Explain How Hiking Actually Changes Our Brains

Three simple steps you can take to clear blocked sinuses that seem to work for many people.

Having clogged sinuses isn’t fun. You can’t breath, you can’t smell, your head hurts, and your voice sounds funny. Finding relief when you have clogged sinuses is usually like finding a million dollars on the ground — it’s amazing!

The causes for nasal congestion can range greatly, and you don’t have to be sick to be congested. Many people will experience congestion from allergies, temperatures, dust, smoking, spicy food, and air particles.

Recently I was at Contact in the Desert in California and I found myself having clogged sinuses from the blowing sand and dry air. Within two days, I couldn’t breathe at all out of one side of my nose and my sinuses got blocked up, causing my face and head to hurt. I needed a solution.

After trying to blow my nose over and over again, I turned to the internet for relief. Sure enough, Google came through.

I found a video by Dr. Adam that quickly and easily explained how to clear sinuses in about one minute using just your fingers — and no, they don’t have to go in your nose. Sure enough, I had relief from the pain the blockage was causing, and I could breathe!

How to Clear Your Sinuses Fast!

You simply need to sit down and get your hands ready for the following steps. The video below offers a visual demonstration, so I recommend checking that out too.

2. Take your index fingers, locate the hard, bony part of the upper sides of your nose, and move downward toward the soft part on the side of your nose where the bone ends. Begin massaging this area in a circular motion with as much pressure as you can for about 20 seconds. Once completed, rub the muscles from the side of your nose down and toward your cheekbones to relax them.

3. Take your index fingers and run them under the inside orbit bone above your eyes until you find a notch in the bone called the super orbital notch. It is usually just above the centre of the eye. Massage that notch in a circular motion with as much pressure as you can handle for about 20 seconds. Once done, massage your forward with both hands starting in the centre of your forehead and pulling outwards towards your temples.

That’s it! Once you have gone through this process you should notice a lot of relief in your sinuses and should be able to blow your nose quite easily. You may have to repeat this process again, but play with it and see what works for you.

Below is a video from Dr. Adam explaining the entire process. I have also included another helpful method that worked well for me as well.

This method is simpler but may not be as effective for everyone. As always, do what works best for you.

1. Push your tongue flat into the roof of your mouth, with decent pressure, for one second.

3. Alternate between steps one and two over and over again for about 20-30 seconds. Note: You are not pressing the points at the same time, simply alternating between them.

Repeat this process as necessary to help clear your sinuses.

If you’ve had blocked sinuses, you probably don’t want it to happen often, so prevention is the key! Here are a few ways you can avoid blocked sinuses.

Eat a well-balanced diet – Eating healthy foods promotes good health. What you put into your body to digest is what determines your health. If you want your immune system working well, take care with quality food and keep your gut performing well.

Get regular exercise – Regular exercise also helps improve overall health and the immune system.

Quit smoking – It goes without saying, but cigarettes are not good for us and the smoke can irritate sinuses.

Use a humidifier – If you find your house dry, use a humidifier to help dampen the air. You can also hop in a warm shower and breathe in the steam. It’s best to use a chlorine filter on your shower head so you aren’t breathing in toxic chemicals from chlorine.

Keep a clean home – Dust and poor air quality can also cause blocked sinuses. Vacuum and wipe down surfaces of your home regularly. Decrease clutter and areas where dust can collect and stay.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), considered a neurobiological condition, is an often “long-lasting disorder in which a person has uncontrollable, reoccurring thoughts (obsessions), and behaviors (compulsions) that he or she feels the urge to repeat over and over.” Although the specific obsessions and compulsions vary widely from person to person, the common denominator is that they “create stress and interfere with daily life.”

U.S. researchers estimate that OCD affects 1%-2% of children and up to 3% of adolescents and adults. The current lifetime prevalence estimate of around 2.7% is 54 times higher than the estimated pre-1980s prevalence (for the U.S. population as a whole) of around 0.05% (1 in 2000). In a retrospective hospital-based study that looked at OCD prevalence over time, researchers who examined psychiatric discharge diagnoses from 1969 to 1990 reported that something changed in the 1980s, with a marked increase in the frequency of OCD diagnoses over the decade.

Reflecting the disorder’s growing prominence, the American Psychiatric Association’s 2013 diagnostic manual revisions eliminated OCD as a subcategory of “anxiety disorders” and gave the diagnosis its own category of “obsessive-compulsive and related disorders.” OCD experts now urge busy neurologists “to be aware of OCD…and to have a high index of suspicion for this disorder.”

OCD is just one of numerous neurodevelopmental disorders that have gone from relatively rare to common since the late 1980s—over the same time frame in which the childhood vaccine schedule exploded. There are at least three reasons to suspect a potential vaccine-OCD link:

As Duke University researchers have stated, “the immune system, both in the central nervous system (CNS) and in the periphery, is crucial in shaping and influencing normal brain functions, and any disruption of immune function could adversely impact the brain too.”

Not only OCD

Studies show that OCD is more severe when it is early-onset; when diagnosed before puberty, children have “a longer duration of illness [and] higher rates of comorbid tics” as well as more frequent compulsions and greater psychosocial difficulties. In addition to comorbid tics, OCD often presents alongside autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and other diagnoses that are not only increasingly common in American children but often persist into adulthood. In a study of adults with OCD, three out of four (75%) had one or more other neuropsychiatric diagnoses. Researchers also believe that some types of OCD may be closely related to PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections).

Compared to girls, boys tend toward a greater neuroinflammatory response, reflecting sex differences in how the brain’s principal immune cells (the microglia) function. This may be one of the reasons why early-onset OCD is two to three times more common in boys. (In early adulthood, however, OCD symptoms appear more frequently in women.) In this respect, OCD is no different from a number of other neurodevelopmental and health conditions, including ASD, that also disproportionately affect boys.

The Yale study

In 2017, researchers from the Yale Child Study Center published a retrospective case-control study in Frontiers in Psychiatry that considered a possible association between prior vaccination and increased incidence of seven neuropsychiatric disorders, including OCD. Recall that at the start of the 1980s, children received three vaccines for seven illnesses (totaling two dozen doses by age 18), whereas fully vaccinated children now get almost six dozen doses for sixteen conditions.

The Yale researchers looked at a national sample of privately insured children and adolescents (ages 6-15) for the six-year period from January 2002 through December 2007. They found that for four diagnoses—OCD, anorexia nervosa, anxiety disorder and tic disorder—the affected children were more likely than matched controls to have received a flu shot in the preceding 12 months. In addition:

All three vaccines marketed in the U.S. for hepatitis A—GlaxoSmithKline’s Havrix and Twinrix and Merck’s Vaqta—list anorexia as adverse reactions reported during clinical trials. The Yale authors considered the “high comorbidity rates” between OCD and anorexia significant and also highlighted that OCD and anorexia have a number of “immune-mediated mechanisms” in common.

OCD is also frequently comorbid with a variety of autoimmune diseases. A recent Swedish study reported that individuals with OCD had a 43% increased risk of any autoimmune disease (compared to those without OCD), and “significantly elevated” risks for autoimmune conditions “across all organ systems”:

Beware the adjuvants

Given the extensive overlap between OCD and autoimmunity, the growing body of research that links vaccine adjuvants to autoimmunity is relevant for OCD. In fact, adjuvants—intended to intensify the immune response to a vaccine (immunogenicity)—present vaccine makers with a dilemma: “[I]ncreased vaccine reactogenicity [adverse reactions to vaccination] is the inevitable price for improved immunogenicity.”

Pointing to their influenza vaccination findings, the authors of the Yale study note that six European countries and China linked H1N1 influenza vaccination in 2009 to autoimmune narcolepsy, and some speculated that the H1N1 vaccine’s adjuvant—a squalene-based oil emulsion called AS03—was the culprit. Researchers caution:

A major recurring concern is the potential association between oil emulsion adjuvants and autoimmune disease induction as seen in animal and fish models. A single intradermal injection of a range of oil emulsions, including squalene emulsions, induces adjuvant arthritis in susceptible murine and rat models. […] There is a theoretical risk that any humans who share similar genetic susceptibility features to these models could similarly be prone to develop adjuvant arthritis, lupus, autoimmune hepatitis, uveitis or some other form of autoimmune disease after exposure to oil emulsion adjuvants alone or when combined with other potent innate immune activators [emphasis added].

Aluminum-based vaccine adjuvants—and especially the proprietary AAHS [amorphous aluminum hydroxyphosphate sulfate] adjuvant that Merck includes in its Gardasil 9, hepatitis A, hepatitis B and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) vaccines—are also a prominent suspect in the autoimmunity epidemic. Researchers who compared AAHS to two other types of aluminum adjuvants found that AAHS was “substantially” different from the other two in revving up the immune system. As Italian researchers have stated, “the specific mechanism of action of each single adjuvant may have different effects on the course of different diseases.”

Hear no evil, see no evil

Pharmacotherapy with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) is a “first-line” treatment for OCD; because remission is uncommon, “long-term management is often necessary.” Pfizer and GlaxoSmithKline—two of the four companies that lead the U.S. vaccine market—make some of the top-selling SSRIs prescribed for individuals with OCD; the two pharma behemoths completed a joint venture in 2019 to integrate their consumer health care businesses. From their point of view, OCD represents an attractive market.

Meanwhile, earlier this year, the federal government and the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program turned down citizen requests to add asthma, autism, tics and several neuropsychiatric disorders—including PANDAS—to the Program’s Vaccine Injury Table. The feds’ refusal was not terribly surprising: very few new injuries have made it onto the Table since the Program came into being in 1986, despite the large number of vaccines piled onto the childhood schedule after that year. The government’s resolute refusal to conduct needed studies and its denial of even the possibility of vaccine culpability for conditions such as OCD leaves individuals no choice but to ferret out answers on their own.

Marijuana confiscated by NYPD is actually legal hemp

What were they smoking?

The NYPD crowed that it confiscated a 106-pound marijuana shipment, but the owner of the company the flora was bound for says the greenery was no more than hemp containing legal CBD for use by cancer sufferers — and he’s got the papers to prove it.

Oren Levy, who sells hemp wholesale through his company GreenAngels CBD, claims that a “gung-ho” Fedex driver took it upon himself to report the shipment to the 75th Precinct when it arrived in Brooklyn — despite the fact that the cargo had all the necessary documentation to prove it was legal.

Cops determined it was straight-up, illegal marijuana, but Levy claims cops used an outdated testing method.

“Industry hemp looks like real weed…It’s the same species of plant, it’s just the chemical compound is different,” Levy explained adding his product was below legal federal limits for THC.

The Post reviewed paperwork prepared by a third-party and shipped along with the hemp certifying that THC levels were well below the federal legal limit of .3 percent THC by volume.

His hemp shipment was certified to contain .14 percent THC, according to documents he provided The Post.

On Saturday, cops called GreenAngels CBD telling them to come pick up their greenery — but when Levy’s brother Ronen arrived at the station house, cops instead slapped cuffs on him.

A day later, the 75th Precinct tweeted a photo of dozens of large bags of what looks like marijuana with the caption, “Great job by Day Tour Sector E yesterday. Working with FedEx and other local law enforcement, they were able to confiscate 106 Lbs. of marijuana, and arrest the individual associated with the intended delivery.”

Eight in 10 Americans have made a U-turn in their…

GreenAngels CBD fired back on Instagram that “This was our shipment. My brother was falsely arrested. Those bags were all hemp. All documents were in each box. The farm also called them to give them all there paperwork proving it’s all hemp ! Please spread the word! We need to let people know we are not criminals!”

“I want it back. It’s 100 percent legal” Levy told The Post adding that he is out up to $30,000 since the cops took the delivery. “I have helped thousands of people — people with cancer, people with autism, pain, arthritis, people with severe skin issues, people who haven’t slept for weeks. We are a legitimate business.”

A Brooklyn criminal judge released Ronen without bail on Sunday, according to court records.

Andrew Subin, a lawyer with the Vermont farm that sold Levy the plants, said a detective from the precinct asked him what the legal THC limit was.

“He was claiming that he didn’t know the legal limit. He said that he needed to do his own test,” Subin said. “We have a test by a certified lab, so I don’t understand why they need to do their own test. This is having a real impact on our client and the buyer.”

Subin’s law partner, Timothy Fair, said warned the cops have no ground to hold the plants, which can lose their potency over time.

“I think it’s entirely inappropriate for them [the 75th Precinct] to put that on Facebook when no crime was committed. For them to gloat over the seizure of hemp is not appropriate,” Subin said of the East New York cop shop’s tweet. “There is no grounds for holding this product. It is a time sensitive matter. The hemp won’t be viable indefinitely.”

Big-box retailers aren’t selling CBD yet, but they’re busy getting…

The hemp is legal under federal law, according to David Holland, a lawyer who advocates to legalize marijuana.

“The bottom line is as long as all the load has less than .3 percent [THC] it’s legal under the federal farm bill and therefore legal in New York State,” he said.

“It’s not surprising that their [the NYPD’s] antiquated testing would still show positive for THC. But the presence of THC is no longer the line of demarcation as to whether a crime is committed or not because it will come up positive. It’s whether it’s over .3 percent of THC by volume.”

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a chemical found in the cannabis plant that is not psychoactive unlike THC. It is often used as an alternative medicine to help people with pain and anxiety.

“The laws governing hemp have gone through changes over the years but now hemp is legal in New York,” added Manhattan lawyer Carla Sanderson. “The NYPD may have been mistaken in making this arrest without probable cause that a crime was committed.”

Cops did not return requests for comment.
